Architectural Historian / Architectural Survey Coordinator

Salary: $35.00/hour on W2 (without benefits)

Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Architectural Historian / Architectural Survey Coordinator to support an architectural reconnaissance survey project focused on identifying potential historic resources and areas with low potential for historic resources within flood-prone communities. This role will be responsible for coordinating survey activities, conducting field investigations and research, managing project data, and preparing technical documentation and reports.

The ideal candidate will have experience in architectural history, historic preservation surveys, field documentation, and data management, along with strong organizational and communication skills.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate planning, fieldwork, data collection, analysis, and reporting for architectural survey projects
  • Conduct background research and compile summary histories for target communities and historic resources
  • Perform desktop reviews and architectural field surveys to identify and document historic properties
  • Plan and schedule survey activities, including travel logistics, field coordination, and resource management
  • Manage, organize, and transfer field data, including GPS data, digital photographs, GIS datasets, and survey records
  • Prepare technical documentation, survey forms, project reports, and status updates
  • Coordinate internal and external review processes for survey findings and project deliverables
  • Provide technical support and guidance related to architectural survey projects and historic preservation activities
  • Maintain accurate project records and ensure data quality and consistency
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of historic preservation laws, regulations, standards, and policies
  • Strong understanding of architectural history, historic resource identification, and survey methodologies
  • Experience conducting architectural field surveys and documenting architectural resources
  • Familiarity with GIS and/or GPS data collection and mapping tools
  • Experience with database management systems and online data platforms
  • Ability to use digital cameras and field documentation equipment effectively
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and reporting abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Valid driver’s license preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in architectural survey fieldwork, analysis, and reporting
  • Experience supporting historic preservation, cultural resource management, or related field projects
  • Familiarity with floodplain or community-based survey projects is a plus
